Fred Estate

The Concept

After losing her home to the 2017 Tubbs fire, our client purchased a 5 ½ acre property in west Sonoma County, featuring a dilapidated 1940s cabin and duplex. Initially planned as an intentional community with multiple residences, we pivoted to focus on rehabbing the two buildings and the surrounding landscape. The design integrates sustainable materials and unique details, with the homeowner drawing inspiration from reclaimed elements, built-in furniture, and carefully sourced finishes, lighting, and plumbing fixtures.

The 1,200 sq ft interior was completely transformed, embracing a modern open feel while retaining the original structure's compact footprint. Key design elements—such as thoughtful window placements, an interior transom window, and an asymmetrical vaulted ceiling—introduce an abundance of natural light and frame the stunning views of the newly revitalized landscape.

A steel pergola structure off the kitchen serves as the main entry point, with pathways leading to a lap pool, outdoor shower, firepit, pizza oven, barns, vegetable garden, and orchard. Reclaimed redwood, steel retaining walls, poured concrete pavers, and permeable pathways create a seamless connection to the land.

Once dominated by invasive species and depleted soil, the property has been carefully restored with native plants, agaves, and trees, transforming it into a vibrant, thriving landscape. The area now welcomes an abundance of new wildlife, birds, and insects, completing the project’s vision of renewal and harmony with the natural environment.
