The Concept
This project began with a long-standing client who approached us to design one final building for their estate: a small accessory structure to serve as a gathering space for tai chi classes and informal entertaining. To explore a range of possibilities, we launched the project as an internal design charrette, inviting team members to develop and present distinct design concepts. The client embraced the process, then selected one scheme to move forward into design and construction.
The building took its cues from a variety of formal elements present on the site, including asymmetrical volumes, clerestory windows, bay windows projections, and large multi-panel sliding doors that open the interior to the surrounding landscape. The material palette also drew from those established in earlier projects on the property, including thermally modified wood siding, exterior lime plaster, and corten steel accents.
In addition, soapstone was brought in to celebrate our clients passion for geology, and was featured throughout the project, serving as the threshold for the expansive sliding door system and as custom bench seating integrated into the outdoor patio. Large wall openings further strengthen the connection between interior and exterior spaces, creating a flexible environment for movement, gathering, and quiet reflection.
The project is currently in the final stages of construction.
