Lars’ Reflections: Gratitude in a Time of Perseverance

A few weeks ago, I was able to navigate the restrictions of the pandemic and do a backpacking trip in Joshua Tree National Park. This was the latest chapter in an annual tradition I have with friends from my college days; every year for the last 32 we pick a new wilderness destination to travel for one week, escaping into nature, carrying only what we need, unplugging, refreshing, and reconnecting.

I wasn’t sure if it made sense to even do the trip this year. The social challenges we’ve faced with Covid have been daunting enough, and it was hard to even pick a destination that was safe from the ongoing threat of wildfires. But I was quickly came to realize how valuable the opportunity was this year, and how important the tradition is.

Being in the wide open expanse of the desert, surrounded by the pure beauty of nature and the kinship of old friends, allowed me the space to hear my own thoughts clearly, and to process the myriad feelings of a tough year. Unplugging from the digital world of constant informational input helped me particularly appreciate our perseverance as individuals and as a community as a common thread we all share. And most importantly, I touched into a place of so much gratitude.

I am particularly grateful this year for the extra effort we have made to create and foster meaningful connections during isolation, for the opportunity to collaborate and create in the face of rebuilding, for the support of friends, family, dedicated professionals, and a fantastic team. Let’s stay strong together.

With appreciation,
Lars
