Lars’ Reflections: Sojourning in 2021

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

I received an email from my father the other day; he'll share his thoughts with me from time to time on the world at large, while also occasionally delving into more personal observations of my work.  As a lifelong progressive educator, he's always had a thoughtful way of inspiring and engaging in creative exploration.

He writes:

Hi Lars,

The pictures of your recent projects have me thinking that you should write a book or an illustrated pamphlet.  On the most intimate level, it could be about problem-solving, and on a larger level, post fires, on architecture as a force for healing; healing the earth, our planet, the environment, the world.

Love,
dad

Thinking over his words, I reflect on what role healing has played in our lives and work: for our clients recovering from devastation of wildfires, or working to resuscitate neglected sites. And for myself and our team, as we’ve adapted to the challenge of a changing world, both short and long term.  The past year or so has been both very challenging and rewarding, all part of the process of our work.  How wonderful it is to consider all of our resiliency, growth and adaptability with the perspective of architecture as a force for positive change.

We've all been navigating as best we can.

With gratitude,
Lars
